Western

Background

The Western Region is located in the western part of the country.  It shares common borders with Central Region, Ashanti Region, Eastern and the Brong Ahafo Region.  It also shares borders on the West with Cote de Voire.  The population is 2,376,021 according to the 2010 population and housing census.

The Region has two major occupational activities, namely fishing and farming and can boast of a number of natural resources, such as timber, gold, bauxite, manganese and diamond.

Status of Income Generating Activities:

There are a number of Income Generating Activities going on in the region.  Prominent among them are bee-keeping, soap making, cassava processing, farming, animal rearing, bead making, oil extraction and nursery.  Currently, there are 29 active groups.  Seven of these groups have benefitted from the NFED credit support.

The recovery rate is about 15 percent.  This is due to marketing challenges and the difficult terrain.  Eleven other groups have been identified and preparations are advanced for full scale production.

Regional Partners

At the regional level, the division collaborates with a number of organizations.  Notable among them are Ministry of Agric, NADMO, N.C.C.E and the Ministry of Health. They collaborate with the division largely in the area of training and reinforcement of learning in class.

Literacy Rate

According to the 2010 population and housing census, the region has a total population of 1,108,272. Out of this, 58.2% constituting 645,014.304 are literate of the number. 68.0% are males whiles 32.0% are females.

Learning Support Systems

The division is in partnership with radio stations in the region, namely Space FM and Dynamite Fm, both in the Tarkwa Nsuaem District.  Media officers in charge have been trained accordingly to produce and broadcast programmes for classes in the catchment areas of stations on a sustainable basis.

Again, all the districts have book boxes fully stocked with supplementary readers.  Both learners and neo-literates are making good use of these books.

Status of Literacy Class

Currently, there are two hundred and seventy-five (275) literacy classes in the Region made up of batches 16 and 17 classes.

Role of Communities

Involvement of communities in literacy delivery starts right from the selection of facilitators to recruitment of learners and establishment and management of classes.
