INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY, 2025
International Literacy Day (ILD) has been celebrated annually since September 8, 1967. The commemoration presents an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of literacy to socio-economic development. It is also a day to remind the international community, individuals, and communities of the relevance of literacy and the need to intensify efforts towards more literate societies.
The 8th of September was designated as International Literacy Day by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to remind policymakers of the critical need to promote literacy and enhance peace and sustainable development.
The Complementary Education Agency of the Ministry of Education is the lead in the celebration in tacit collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and other Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) within the literacy space.
International Literacy Day 2025 will be celebrated with a durbar on Monday, September 8, at the Ghana National Association of Teachers’ Hall (GNAT Hall), Sanirigu in Tamale, the capital of the Northern Region.
The 58th Literacy Day would be celebrated with a global theme, “Promoting literacy in the digital era”
Literacy has become essential for participation in the digital economy and modern society. Human life is increasingly shaped by digital tools. Illiteracy prevents the vulnerable, marginalised, and disadvantaged from exploring and utilising opportunities that the digital space offers. This creates a situation of double jeopardy.
We live, work, and communicate smartly under the auspices of digital tools. The crowding-out of this ecosystem is a critical setback to the socioeconomic development of the illiterate.
Join us as we celebrate this day to raise awareness of the need to promote literacy in the present dispensation.
