International Literacy Day, 2024

International Literacy Day (ILD) has been celebrated annually since 8th September, 1967. The commemoration presents an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of literacy to socio-economic development. It is also a day that prompts individuals, institutions, and nations about the detriments of illiteracy.

The 8th of September was set aside as International Literacy Day by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to remind policy-makers of the critical need to promote literacy to enhance peace and sustainable development.

The 2024 International Literacy Day falls on Sunday 8th September. However, the scheduled celebration by the Complementary Education Agency has been moved to Friday 6th September.

In Ghana, the celebration is led by the Complementary Education Agency of the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and other Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) within the literacy space.

The 57th International Literacy Day 2024 is slated for Jachie STEM School Dinning Hall in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region. The global theme for this year is “Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace”. However, the country-related theme is “Celebrating Multilingual Literacy through Digitalization to Promote Peace”. It looks at the critical role language plays not only as a tool for communication, education, social integration, and development but, also as a repository for each person’s unique identity, cultural history, traditions, and memory.
