GHANA TO HOST 2027 WORLD INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY CELEBRATION

Ghana has long led in delivering quality education in West Africa. In recognition of this standing, the country has officially secured the hosting rights for the 2027 UNESCO global International Literacy Day (ILD) celebration.

Hon. Daniel Kwesi Ashiamah, Executive Director of the Complementary Education Agency (CEA) of the Ministry of Education, represented Ghana at the 2026 World Literacy Day celebration in Chiapas, Mexico. He briefed Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister for Education, on the global event held in Mexico. Present at the briefing were Hon. Dr. Clement Apaak, the Deputy Education Minister; the Chief Director of the Ministry of Education; and representatives of the UNESCO Ghana Head Office and the Ghana National Commission for UNESCO.

Hon. Ashiamah received the hosting trophy after attending the 2026 worldwide festivity in Chiapas, Mexico, on behalf of the Minister. The trophy signifies Ghana’s right to host the 2027 World Literacy Day. This follows Ghana’s status as a good-standing member of UNESCO.

Speaking at the briefing, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu stated that despite the impacts of successive governments, Ghana has strived to expand access to education, including efforts currently underway by the Complementary Education Agency. He further emphasized that hosting the global ILD will provide a platform to showcase decades of educational reforms and achievements, spanning from the era of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, to the current administration under President John Dramani Mahama.

The 2027 global ILD event will, however, coincide with a monumental period for the nation as it marks our 70th Independence Anniversary. The celebration is expected to draw international scholars, policymakers, and global education leaders. He called for a symposium centred on a theme such as “Education in a Rapidly Changing Technological World” to spearhead the commemoration.

COMPLEMENTARY EDUCATION AGENCY ROLLS OUT SALIP PROJECT.

The Complementary Education Agency (CEA) is proud to announce the rollout of the Skills Acquisition for Livelihood Project (SALIP) under its Occupational Skills Development initiative. As part of this impactful programme, the Sewing and Craft Module will officially commence on 16th March 2026 at Twene Amanfo Senior High Technical School (SHTS).
SALIP is designed to equip participants with practical, hands-on skills that promote self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihoods. The Sewing and Craft Module will provide beneficiaries with the technical knowledge and creative competencies needed to generate income and improve their economic well-being. This initiative reaffirms CEA’s commitment to expanding access to quality skills training and empowering individuals—especially youth and women—with employable and income-generating skills.
We encourage interested participants and community members to take advantage of this opportunity to acquire valuable skills for a better future.
